The Three Whales

Origin of the Papamoa hills

“The Three Whales” legend unveils the fascinating origin of the Papamoa hills, a cherished tale among the Tauranga Moana iwi. This timeless story unfolds in the distant past, as a mother whale and her calf set sail through the Tauranga Harbour, chasing after stingrays.

Along their journey, they travelled past Mauao and Matakana Island, eventually reaching Rangataua Bay.

The shifting tides trapped them in shallower waters. Desperate to break free, they wrestled through the mudflats, their struggle wearing them out. Finally, near Karikari Point, they found respite by sipping from a magical stream. This enchanted stream transformed the mother whale into a rolling hill, gazing northward, with the calf fixed in place, nestled beside her.

A third whale, the father whale, went on a quest to find his family. He followed their path, ultimately sharing their fate. Tired and stranded, he too drank from the magical stream.

These three monumental whale-shaped hills now stand over Papamoa and Tauranga. Among the local Maori, the mother whale is known as Mangatawa, a rolling hill 117 meters high near Truman Lane’s end. The calf takes the name Hikurangi, representing the lower peak of Mangatawa hill, while the father whale is Kopukairoa, a rounded hill standing at 265 meters, located south of Mangatawa between Waitao and Rocky Cutting Roads. The stream they drank from is the “Te Wai U o te Tohora”, which means “the milk of the mother whale”. Sometimes the water flowing from the stream turns white like milk.

History of Leisure Island (Moturiki)

Unveiling the Rich History of Mount Maunganui

Off the coast of Mount Maunganui beside Main Beach, Moturiki Island, often fondly referred to as “Leisure Island,” holds a special place in the hearts of many locals. This small island has a rich history that dates back several decades, featuring a fascinating transformation from an aquatic attraction to a water park to a local go-to for blowholes and stellar views of the mount.

Marineland Outdoor Aquarium  (1966-1981):

The story of Leisure Island begins in 1966 when Marineland opened its doors on Moturiki Island. Marineland was an attraction that showcased an array of marine life, including dolphins, seals, and various species of fish. Visitors flocked to the island to witness awe-inspiring dolphin shows and get up close and personal with aquatic creatures they might never have encountered otherwise. For fifteen years, it reeled in visitors with its underwater world and provided a unique learning experience for families and tourists alike.

Tauranga Historical Society – Marineland, Moturiki (Leisure Island)

Leisure Island (1981-1990):

As the years went by, the popularity of Marineland began to wane, and in 1981, it made way for a new venture – Leisure Island. The new attraction transformed the existing large pools and infrastructure into a recreational paradise. Leisure Island introduced a host of exciting activities that drew visitors from far and wide. Visitors could now enjoy thrilling bumper boat rides, slide down hydro slides, and take a refreshing dip in the pools.

NZ Herald – Leisure Island

Farewell to Leisure Island (1990-Present):

Despite its popularity, Leisure Island’s reign as a top attraction came to an end in 1990 when it closed its doors for the last time. While the island has seen various proposals for redevelopment over the years, none have come to fruition, leaving it in a state of serene abandonment. The island now has a popular walking track that will lead you to the northern tip of the island where you’ll find a blowhole that spectacularly shoots water skyward during high tides and large ocean swells.
